Christiania

Despite the name, Christiania has no connection with religion, instead it is a conroversial hippie town or commune, situated within the city of Copenhagen.

Christiania started as a social experiment in the early 70’s and started in abondoned army baracks. There are now 700 people living here of which 20% apparantly “lie on the sofa and say peace and love whilst smoking marijuana”.

It’s a self sufficient community, with a motto of no hard drugs, no weapons, no violence. It’s also a car free zone, so everyone tends to get around on bikes (of all description).

We were given a tour by someone who has lived there for 28 years, and it was an incredibly strange and interesting experience.
