Cenotes….
Today we went snorkelling in the Cenotes near Tulum, on the Yucatán Peninsula. ´Cenotes are basically limestone caves, filled with crystal clear, fresh water and covered in stalactites and stalagmites. In the Yucatan, there is a network of over 200km of cave systems, all linked by water.
We saw 2 caves today, and they were stunning! In some places there is natural light filtering through holes in the ground above, but for most parts, we relied on torches. ´Life´ in there included bats, fish, yabbies. We swam through the caves for several hours, at and times found ourselves floating on top of the water, wedged between stalactites from above and below…..a little scary! But, it was one of those amazing experiences you never forget!
